Tallow should be at least grass-fed. Grass-finished is even better. And it should be derived from suet (kidney fat) - random trim fat has a low concentration of nutrients, doesn’t absorb as well, and can block pores. We use grass-finished suet tallow to ensure a higher concentration of beneficial nutrients, better skin absorption, and a cleaner, more premium ingredient profile.

If tallow is exposed to heat that's too high during processing, its most beneficial micronutrients break down. To avoid this, we use a traditional slow, low heat, wet rendering method. It maintains minimal even heat throughout both rendering and processing to protect the ingredients, ensuring your skin receives maximum nutritional value.

A high-quality tallow balm that’s pure and processed well should have little to no strong “beef” scent. Subtle natural aromas from light essential oils are fine, but overpowering fragrances or a strong beef scent can indicate lower-quality processing, low quality tallow or unnecessary additives.

Whipped texture may seem easier to spread. But the process of whipping adds air and fluffs up the tallow to take more space. This means two things:

• A 60ml jar of whipped tallow is more like a 40ml jar of actual product and the rest is air, so you’re paying more for something that runs out quicker.
• Addition of air speeds up the oxidation process, so the tallow becomes rancid a lot quicker.
